Meet 2018 Music Educator Award Winner Melissa Salguero

The 2018 Music Educator Award Winner has been announced.

Melissa Salguero has been teaching music at P.S.48 Joseph R. Drake Elementary School since 2010. P.S.48, located in the South Bronx, lies is in the poorest congressional district in the United States. Ms. Salguero's classroom is a place where creativity, curiosity, humor, and hard work combine to feed a passion for learning.

When Ms. Salguero started teaching there were no instruments and no funding for the music program at P.S.48. Over the years, she has been awarded many grants and teaching awards that have helped to ensure that none of her students are excluded from participating in the music program due to financial hardships. Last year, Ms. Salguero was a Semifinalist for the 2017 Music Educator Award. Other accolades include "Bronx 25 Most Influential Women of 2017" and the "Lincoln Center Arts Teacher of the Year" in 2013. Melissa is also a member of NAfME. In 2014, Ms. Salguero and the school were featured on the Ellen DeGeneres show after the school was broken into.

Her mission is to spark a love of learning in her students, to inspire them to dream big, and to never give up on their goals because nothing is impossible.

CBS visited P.S. 48 to interview Ms. Salguero and several of her students. Watch that feature here.
