GRAMMY Camp – Jazz Session

What is GRAMMY Camp - Jazz Session? The GRAMMY Camp - Jazz Session program identifies and selects top high school instrumentalists. Students from across the country have the opportunity to audition for the GRAMMY Band and participate in the GRAMMY Jazz Tour. Selectees are also eligible for more than $2 million in scholarships from College Partners, they perform in GRAMMY Week events, and they attend the GRAMMYs.

Where and when does GRAMMY Camp - Jazz Session take place? The 2018 Jazz Session will take place in New York City, which is where the 60th GRAMMY Awards will be held, from January 23-29, 2018.

Now that there is no choir, will there still be a combo? The combo element of the Jazz Session has also been suspended for 2018. Rhythm players are still encouraged to audition for the GRAMMY Band.

May students in public, private, parochial, or home school also audition? Yes! Any student across the United States enrolled in a high school (public, private, parochial, charter, homeschooled, etc.) is eligible. Children of service men and women stationed outside the country are also eligible provided they can get to New York if selected.

Can college students apply? No. The program is limited to students currently enrolled in high school as descibed above.

What is the program cost and what does it include? Those who are selected for GRAMMY Camp - Jazz Session will participate in the GRAMMY Jazz Tour. The GRAMMY Museum will provide for program costs including lodging, all meals, and ground transportation, as well as all performance, education, and other activities. Selectees will be responsible for airfare expenses (Airfare Scholarships are available based upon need).

Is there an Application fee I should know about? Yes, there is a one-time $10 application fee for Jazz Session. You may either pay by credit card when you submit your application, or mail a check or money order in with your audition materials made payable to the GRAMMY Museum Foundation. Please note - if you are applying for more than one instrument or voice, you only need to pay the $10 fee once.

Where do I go for the Application? The application is available on our Apply page.

After I complete the online application, am I done? No, there are specific audition requirements that you must also submit.

When is the deadline to apply? The deadline is October 22 at 11:59pm PDT.

When will selectees be announced? Each entrant is emailed in early December a message announcing the selectees.

Who will be responsible for chaperoning participants? GRAMMY Camp – Jazz Session will be supervised at all times by GRAMMY Museum staff and overnight security will be on-site each night.

Will the GRAMMY Camp - Jazz Session group attend or perform on the actual GRAMMY Awards Telecast? All members of GRAMMY Camp – Jazz Session will attend the ceremonies.

Most universities have application deadlines before the ensembles meet in February. Will I still be eligible for scholarships from participating universities if I've not applied? Some Universities will grant selectees additional time to apply. However, if you think you may be interested in a particular institution, you are encouraged to apply before their regular deadline. Some schools will allow your participation in the GRAMMY Camp - Jazz Session to substitute for their normal audition procedure.

Which colleges participate in the GRAMMY Camp - Jazz Session College Partners program? Current participants are Berklee College of Music, Manhattan School of Music, New School University for Jazz & Contemporary Music, and University of Southern California Thornton School of Music. Additionally, many other fine institutions will send representatives to speak with the young people on College Day. There will be a time allowed during College Day for parents to interact with the representatives.

How many students will be selected? A 16 – 18 piece big band. There will also be a band director, one GRAMMY Museum staff member, and a group supervisor on site with the youngsters throughout their stay. Additional personnel will be on hand at the hotel in the evening hours and at select events.

Are any of the performances open to the public? Yes. Relatives and friends are encouraged to travel to the host city and attend all public performances including GRAMMY in the Schools Live! Special room rates are available at the GRAMMY Camp - Jazz Session host hotel.

Can parents accompany selectees? Only if parents make their own reservations on the same flights. They may also book rooms in the same hotel (if available) but they must provide their own ground transportation.

Are parents able to purchase tickets to the GRAMMY Awards? The GRAMMY Award telecast is not open to the public and, therefore, parents may not attend unless they qualify through normal ticketing procedures.
