Introduction to GRAMMY Camp — Jazz Session

Drew Schwendiman - GRAMMY In The Schools Media Team

The 2014 GRAMMY Camp Jazz Session has officially begun and it's sure to be another tremendous success with 32 talented students from 30 cities and 12 states.  Though we boarded different planes, we're all ready to take off on an exciting journey consisting of rehearsals, performances, and, of course, the 56th Annual GRAMMY Awards!  While the performers are practicing, Lauren Craig and I will be documenting this wonderful experience so that everyone at home can vicariously enjoy this program through all of us here.

After introducing ourselves to each other at the airport, we headed over to the hotel.  We were treated to a much-needed lunch but it wasn't until dinner that we realized how special this program really is.  David Sears, the Executive Education Director, named off a few alumni who have had successful careers since GRAMMY Camp Jazz Session.  Troy Andrews (Trombone Shorty), Gerald Clayton, Aaron Parks, and Esperanza Spalding were just a few of the names that reverberated throughout the room.  To know that all of us here have the capability to succeed in this industry is truly remarkable and inspiring.  I'm sure all of us here will create some of our most cherished memories over the next ten days, but like Dr. Ron McCurdy, a Professor of Music in the Jazz Department at the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music, told us, "Enjoy these ten days because you're going to blink and it'll all be over."  If that's the case, then I'm going to try my hardest to not blink, because I don't want this experience to end.
